Wikipedia and Wikimedia Incubator

Wikipedia has an extensive Latin-localized edition, Vicipaedia Latina. As of September 2025 there is no Wikipedia version localized into Ancient Greek. However, there is an experimental Ancient Greek site (Οὐικιπαιδεία) under Wikimedia Incubator. The selection of articles is limited but fascinating:

Classes & Instruction in Spoken Ancient Greek

  • Polis – The Jerusalem Institute of Languages and Humanities
    https://www.polisjerusalem.org
    Polis teaches Ancient Greek as a living language using the immersive Polis Method, devised by Christophe Rico. It offers semester-long and intensive summer courses in Jerusalem, Rome, and the U.S., focusing on total immersion to build fluency in speaking, reading, and writing. Polis also offers some online classes. Polis offers an MA degree in Ancient Philology.
  • Paedeia Institute and Telepaideia
    The Paideia Institute (https://www.paideiainstitute.org) runs “Living Greek in Greece,” an intensive program in the Peloponnese focused on speaking Ancient Greek. It blends language immersion with cultural activities, led by expert classicists.
    Telepaideia (https://www.paideiainstitute.org/telepaideia), offered by the Paideia Institute, provides occasional short-term online courses in spoken Ancient Greek (also in Latin or English). These interactive classes, taught by experienced instructors, use active pedagogy to help students gain conversational skills in the language.
  • Accademia Vivarium Novum

    The Academy Vivarium Novum is a college in Rome where students can spend one or more years immersed in Latin and Ancient Greek, spoken both in and outside of the classroom.

Conventicula, Immersion Classes, and Events

Along with immersion classes, each year several organizations host “conventicula” where participants gather to speak Ancient Greek together in an informal setting.

Conventicula in Spoken Latin

  • Since 1996, an annual summer conventiculum for spoken Latin called the Conventiculum Lexingtoniense has been hosted at the University of Kentucky’s Humanitas Institute, led by Terence Tunberg and Milena Minkova. Sessions are held either onsite in Lexington or online via Zoom. (Link to 2025 event.)
  • A similar conventiculum in spoken Latin, the Conventiculum Dickinsoniense, is held every summer at Dickinson University in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, USA. (Link to 2025 event.)
